Where it started

Seventy-seven points,
as a fourteen-year-old

He was already the most-followed teenager in American basketball before he played a varsity minute. He worked as a ball boy for San Ysidro High head coach Terry Tucker, who said he “couldn't keep him out of the gym.” In eighth grade he joined the North Coast Blue Chips alongside Bronny James; in 2019 he played the AAU circuit with the Compton Magic.

His high school debut, on 20 November 2019, was 46 points. His second game was 50. On 13 December he scored 77 points with nine three-pointers against Kearny — a CIF San Diego Section single-game record and a California state freshman record.

He finished that season averaging 29.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists, led San Ysidro to a CIF-SDS Division III title, and was named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year.

He had over one million Instagram followers before he started high school. By the end of his freshman year the count was close to two million — and Drake, LeBron James and Kevin Durant were among them.
